Septemberfest Report, Howard Mitchell KD9WSV

This event was a tremendous success . We supplied 26 volunteers in our three day engagement for the parade and festival and had zero dropouts. The radio coverage was much approved since we had the opportunity to put an antenna on the roof of the Arts Center. There were several opportunities that demonstrated the value add by our volunteers and this was clearly recognized by the Village multiple times. A huge thank-you to all involved!!

Radio Hill Gazette (RHG) – Eliot Libner N9EPA Editor

WordPress is not a very easy tool to use as it has many issues integrating other tools and formats. Eliot has discussed the issues with Matt Walsh, AC9IG . KW9WR

In a continuing effort to make our website more usable, Bill Reese, KW9WR took an action item to ask Matt to get the certificate for our Schaumburg website.

RECENT EVENT:  Successful SARC/Scouts on the Air event in Wood Dale with Troop 65 on 7/14/25 in the Wood Dale Grove Forest Preserve.

    • Scout Leader contacted Australia!
    • Scouts as well as troop leaders went on-the-air on DMR, UHF (K9IIK), and 20 meters with QSOs
    • Dozens of SARC members (and others) participated on-frequency operators on both UHF and HF
    • On-site volunteers included Kirk (K9MSG), Howard (KD9WSV), Dennis (KD9HIK), Tom (N9GUN), Rob (N9HAX), and Leo (N9NBH) – many thanks to each of them!
    • Members of York Radio Club were hiking nearby and stopped over to see the activity.
    • Had some concerns with pre-event UHF fusion activity that, ultimately, did not conflict with the event.
    • Great weather!
  • PILOTING ENHANCEMENTS:  The group met to contemplate enhancements for future such events to perhaps include 1) fun ways to interact with operators on UHF/VHF, 2) additional prep with Scout leaders/Scouts, and 3) use of direction finding (foxhunting) elements.
  • UPCOMING EVENTS
    1. 8/14/25 – SARC/Scouts on the Air event with Troop 499 in Schaumburg from 7pm – 8:30pm with Scouts expected to be on-the-air from 7:20 to 8:20pm.
      • On-site volunteers include Kirk (K9MSG), Howard (KD9WSV), Dennis (KD9HIK), Tom (N9GUN) and Leo (N9NBH).
      • Will again set-up on DMR, 20-meters, and UHF (K9IIK).
      • For the latter, we will try to find a way to disengage fusion.
      • Will ‘pilot’ a mini fox hunt exercise at the conclusion of the event to gauge how best to incorporate the activity in future events.
    1. 9/20/25 – Pathways to Adventure Council Annual Camporee (Sept 19-21) in Sandwich
      • About to seek SARC members to help with an 8.5-hour commitment to demo Ham Radio on Sept 20 from 8:30am to 5pm at their ‘midway’ event alongside other community members representing law enforcement, aeronautics, NASA, welding professions, etc.
      • Haven’t yet made a commitment… make seek this to be a cross/multi-club initiative to make it work.
    1. 10/20/25 – SARC/Scouts on the Air event with Troop 66 in Bartlet
  • ETCETERA:  We will continue to snag event photos as permitted and encourage future engagement with the club.  Should a Scout want support in pursuit of a Radio Merit Badge, the Club has said there are a handful of qualified merit badge counselors who will step-up.
